ついに出てしまった。あの虫。
I encountered THE bug. Finally.
完全に油断していた。
It took me off guard.
引っ越ししてわずか二週間ほど。言い訳すると、うちにはまだ食料もあまりないし、家自体は古いけれどリノベされていたので新築同様の綺麗さだし、三階だしで、虫は今まであまり遭遇しなかった。
It’s been only two weeks since we moved this apartment, so we don’t have much food. Also our room is removated and clean and it is on the 3rd floor. We haven’t even seen any bug here.
しかし、もうすぐ夏。外では、虫の鳴き声が盛んに聞こえるし、一歩外に出れば蚊に刺される日々。
But sure, the summer is on the way, bugs are getting loud outside, and I am constantly bitten by bugs when I step out from my room.
あ奴に遭遇するのも時間の問題だったのである。
So it’s just a matter of time before I see that one.
そしてついに今日、家で仕事をしていたら目の前をゆっくりと大きな茶色い物体が横切った。キッチンから現れ、バスルームに向かっていったのは、見紛うことなきあの虫だった。
And today, when I was working from home, that brown little thing crossed in front of me. I knew it was THE bug. It suddenly came out from the kichen to head for the bathroom.
まるで我が家であるかのようにリラックスしきって悠々と歩くその虫は、きっとだいぶ前から住んでいて、たまたま横切るところを見られてしまったということなのだろう。
The bug looked very comfortable and relaxed, as if it had been living here for a long time, and I think it has been. I just caught one of his many trips.
足先から冷たくなるのを感じた。
My feet got cold.
絶対に逃してはならないと決意を固め、私はそいつを追ってバスルームへ行った。
I was so determined to catch it and follow after it to the bathroom.
まだその子は悠々と歩いている。
It still walks elegantly in my bathroom.
もしや、テキサスタイプのゴキちゃんはゆっくり歩くのか？と思いながら、一思いにスリッパで叩いたところ、突然ものすごいギアアップしてきた。
I thought maybe the Texas-born roaches are slow walkers, and I hit it with one of my slippers, and suddenly the bug shifted into high gear.
ぎやぁぁっていう声を抑え、より決意を固めてそいつを追った。
I screamed in my heart, and followed it with firmer determination to kill it.
近くにあったクイックルワイパーでパチンと押さえつけ、無事に仕留めた。
I grabbed the floor mop and managed to kill it with it.
仕留めた後は、ひとまず座ってゴキブリ対策を検索し始めた。
After I did my job, I started to search for how to get rid of roaches.
「get rid of roaches forever（永遠にゴキを撲滅する）」「what should I do when I found roaches（ゴキを見つけたらどうする）」「What does one roach mean（一匹のゴキは何を意味する）」などなどを、Google検索窓に次々と打ち込んで、対策案が固まってきた。
I typed “get rid of roaches forever”, “what should I do when I found roaches” or “What does one roach mean” and so on in the google window and learned what I should do next.
それは、以下のとおりである。
My plan was:
①その場にいるゴキを退治する（スプレーやトラップなど）
Kill the roaches you see (with a spray or a trap)
②巣にいる一団を撃退する（毒エサ）
Kill all of them in the nest (with roach killing bait)
③すき間をふさぐ
Cover all the cracks in the house
④予防（ハッカ油やラベンダーなどのゴキが嫌いな匂い）
Repel (with mint or lavender oil)
うちには虫対策グッズは皆無だったので、うちの近くにある（といっても徒歩30分弱の）スーパーであるターゲットに買いに行くことにした。
I don’t have any bug killers so I decided to go buy them at Target near my house, where is 30 minutes walk.
まずはアプリで下見。
I open the Target app and quickly searched.
「roach killer」と入れたらたくさん出てきた。
I typd “roach killer” and there are tons of products.
スプレーとコンバットとハッカスプレーをカートに入れると、「Pickup」「Delivery」「Shipping」のオプションがあり、当日欲しかったので、「Pickup」のオプションに。そのボタンを押すと、「Order Pickup」と「Drive Up」のオプションが出てきた。
I added a spray, a bait, and mint oil spray to the cart and thay asked me to choose from “Pick Up”, “Delivery” and “Shipping”. I wanted them right away so I chose “Pickup” and they also asked me to choose from “Order Pickup” and “Drive Up”.
「Order Pickup」は、アプリで選択し、支払いも済ませておいた商品を店頭のピックアップカウンターで受け取れるというものらしい。
“Order Pickup” semmed to be a service that I order and pay on the app and I can pick them up at the store.
「Drive Up」は、購入するまではOrderpickupと一緒で、店頭のDrive Upスペースに車で行き、着いたらアプリで「I’m here」ボタンを押すと、事前にオーダーしておいた商品を車に積んでくれるというサービスらしい。
“Drive Up” is a service that I order and pay on the app and I drive to the store and when I get there, I press the “I’m here” button and they will load the things I bought in my car.
そんな、商品の数が少ないのなら店で探してカートに入れればいいじゃないか、と思うかもしれないが、アメリカのスーパーはひとつひとつがIKEAばりにでかいので、まず商品を探すのが大変だし、場所がわかっていても物理的に歩く距離がすごいことになるのだ。
You might think it is not necessary, you can just go to the store, put things in your basket and that’s it, but the supermarket in the US is huge like a IKEA store, so it is really difficult to find things in the store in the first place and it’s a hassle to walk around even if you know where you can find waht you are looking for.
というわけで、とてもありがたいこのサービスを利用してゴキグッズをオーダーしてみた。
So I used this service for the first time to buy the roach killers.
アプリで注文し、支払いも済ませてターゲットに向かった。
I ordered and paid on the app and was ready to go.
店に着くと、レジの近くにピックアップカウンターがすぐに見つかった。
When I arrived at Target, I could easily find the pickup counter near the cashier area.
店員さんにMy Orderに現れたバーコードを表示ボタンを押してみせると、すぐに持って来てくれた。
I showed the store staff the barcode that I got from pressing the button on the My Order in the app and she quickly returned with my things.
めっちゃ簡単！楽！最高！
That was so easy and fantastic!
ゴキ対策グッズも手に入ったし、買い物も一瞬で済んだのでとても満足で家に帰った。
I was pleased that I had roach killers with me and the process was so easy and quick.
コンバットをこれでもかというくらいキッチンとバスルームに設置し、ハッカスプレーを窓やドアの付近にかけまくり、駆除スプレーを棚に設置して、一安心。
I placed baits everywhere in the kitchen and the bathroom and sprayed mint oil around the door and the window. I also stored the bug killing spray in the shelf.
ゴキと出会ってから心落ち着かない時間を過ごしていたが、やっとふうと心の平安を取り戻したのでした。
I had been so unsasy since I encountered thhe bug, but I finally enjoyed peace of mind again.
それにしても、オーダーピックアップはかなり便利だなあ。
Anyway, I was really impressed with the “Order Pickup” service. It’s not common in Japan.
